Experienced Worker Assessment (ECS Gold Card)

The ECS Network Infrastructure Installer card is designed for professionals who have achieved the industry-recognised Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA): this is graded as a Level 3 Network Infrastructure assessment.

On successful completion of the assessment, this enables the person to apply for the ECS Gold Card.

Eligibility Criteria

To obtain the FULL Gold Card, the individual must complete both the copper and the fibre optic assessment.

The Copper and Fibre Network Infrastructure Experienced Worker Assessment is only available for individual assessments on the basis that you meet the following criteria:

  • You are or have been previously in possession of a previous ECS Datacomms Card. If you have undertaken qualifications in support of your previous ECS card; for example, the City and Guilds 3667 in both copper and fibre, and you can demonstrate or have evidence that you have at least 5 years or more experience, installing and testing both copper and fibre optic cabling.
  • You are able to provide an employer statement or project reference confirming at least 12 months installation experience.
  • You hold a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

Assessment

Multiple-choice Question Test

Experienced workers are required to complete the multiple-choice question test regardless of which pathway they choose to complete. The multiple-choice question test is an online test taken on Open Awards assessment system (XAMS) that is invigilated by an independent invigilator.

Copper and Fibre Examination

The multiple-choice question test will contain 30 questions for copper and 30 questions for fibre. Each examination will last for a maximum of 45 minutes.

The pass mark for both the copper and fibre multiple-choice question test is 24 (80%) out of 30, however at least 10 of the 15 copper and fibre specific questions must be achieved.

Practical Observation with Questioning

Experienced workers undertaking the assessment are required to undertake both practical tests which comprise of tasks in a controlled environment in line with Open Awards instructions for conducting controlled assessments.

The tasks are arranged, delivered and internally marked by the training provider and are audited and externally quality assured by Open Awards.

The assessment provider will prearrange for ALL assessments to take place at their Assessment Centre in Harlow, Essex. In consultation, other external facilities may be considered in consultation with an employer; it should be noted that this will be quoted for separately. If the person undertaking the Experienced Worker Assessment is self-employed, it is recommended that this assessment takes place at the Assessment Centre.

ALL practical assessments will be undertaken in an appropriate simulated test facility managed by the Training provider.

The practical observation with oral questioning must be carried out over a maximum total assessment time of seven (7) hours for both tasks.

The duration of the entire assessment is 2 days.
