Scotland is known worldwide for its scenery. Beautiful rolling hills, vast nature reserves, and bustling wildlife are trademarks of the Scottish image, creating a sense of local pride and bringing hundreds of thousands of tourists into the country every year and therefore it is imperative we do what we can to preserve it.
The stunning Scottish landscape is home to over 20 onshore wind projects, generating essential renewable and low carbon energy. Scotland’s oldest onshore windfarm is in the process of being repowered to introduce new turbines. Once completed, the windfarm will be able to produce up to 5 times more green energy than before, powering an estimate of 66,000 homes each year.
The project, taking place throughout Summer 2024, demanded a specific build of fibre with rodent resistance and a custom printed sheath – specifications that could have taken months to produce and deliver.
With a required lead time of just 4-5 weeks, the installer for the rollout turned to the dedicated team at Networks Centre Scotland for guidance on a suitable solution that could be produced efficiently. Naturally, we got in touch with the team at Leviton to assist with this challenge.
“They said they didn’t know what to do but I said ‘you do know what to do, you phoned us’”
- Ewan Wotherspoon, Networks Centre Scotland
The collaboration and expertise of Leviton were imperative to successfully fulfilling the requirements, and we were able to have the fibre manufactured inside of the customer’s timescale and delivered into Networks Centre Scotland. Benefitting from a supply chain of just 66 miles between Leviton’s facilities in Glenrothes and the Networks Centre office in Glasgow, the process was sustainable as well as efficient.
To minimise waste, the Networks Centre team assisted with forecasting lengths to be cut from each drum before cutting to length for installation. Networks Centre then provided weights and dimensions of the drums and communicated directly with the site operator to schedule deliveries. Using Networks Centre’s own ULEZ-compliant vehicles for offloading allowed us to meet site access restrictions and deliver the fibre within the strict timescale.
“On one of our recently awarded windfarm projects, we were tasked with procuring the fibre optic cable for the entirety of the project. There was a quick turnaround from the award stage to boots on the ground.
We approached Jamie directly at Networks Centre Scotland and without a hesitation he assured us that he could meet the tight deadlines, spec, and get it delivered to the remote site. Throughout the whole process he was in regular contact and keeping us updated. The cable was delivered on time with no issues, excellent service!”
